Freedom From Religion Foundation Billboards in Atlanta Area

The Freedom From Religion Foundation, a national organization whose mission is to educate the public about the separation of Church and State has unveiled a series of billboards in the Atlanta area.  Several billboards feature a quote from Butterfly McQueen, a long time foundation member and the actress who played Prissy in Gone With the Wind.  “As my ancestors are free from slavery, I am free from the slavery of religion.”  Other billboards quote John Lennon’s “Imagine” as well as suggest that we “Praise Darwin” and “Evolve Beyond Belief.”

When reviewing their website for information on their campaign, one of the most intriguing billboards is the “Heathen’s Greetings” sign.

It is likely that Pagans are as interested in the cause of separation of Church and State as the Freedom From Religion Foundation, however is the foundation alienating possible allies in other religious communities by creating such a divisive advertising campaign?

  1. I’m amused by that sign. They believe it is a cute atheist saying, but instead references a religious group.

Atheists are getting more vocal and that I don’t mind. What I mind is some within the atheists’ groups who are pushing to do away with religion for everyone. The idea is that religion is a sign of mental instability or is preying on the weak and so they are helping society by removing religion from it, “freeing” them. That I’m not a fan of.
